Insurance Checkup: It’s the Season for More Construction Projects

With many people enjoying the summer months at the beach, taking a road trip, or going abroad, contractors are busier than ever, tackling more extensive renovations and remodels. Typical renovations include a kitchen overhaul or bathroom upgrade. With clients away for some time, you can complete major renovations without disrupting their daily routine.

The fall is also another opportunity to complete home renovations, including completing any outdoor projects ahead of winter, with September and October as really busy months for contractors. Homeowners also look to improve their home’s insulation before the cold temperatures arrive. In addition, since builders are super busy during the summer, many homeowners have a better chance of getting a contractor on the job.

Summer and fall are also busy times for breaking ground for new home construction. In the summer, there are more daylight hours for construction, and the warmer weather makes it easier for construction crews to travel to and from the building site.

However, some buyers wait until the fall to take advantage of the lower cost of materials, construction and inspections, and greater availability of building materials. Also, construction crews tend to be more comfortable working in the fall because of the milder weather.

Ensure Your Operation Is Properly Protected

With many projects taking place during the summer and fall months, ensure your construction business is adequately covered. This includes having proper General Liability limits and correct valuations on your Builder’s Risk policy for new builds and renovations. In addition, ensure you have Workers’ Compensation for all your employees and cover your subcontractors if they don’t have their own coverage. Ask for certificates of insurance from all your subcontractors.
